-
Mark Smith said that this year has
brought the highest enrollment yet at OCU! Good to hear!! He suggested that
with “all these new people coming to the community,” this would be a good time
to let them (new people) know about your business &/or how you support the
educational system.
SAA: None.
Lottery: Kelly Feeley bought the winning
ticket of $23. Unfortunately she was not able to find the lucky bean. The pot
has grown to $2,738.
Program: Vince Yaniga introduced today’s
program speaker, Patricia Whalen-Shaw. Patricia is a 20-year resident of
Pickaway County, and has been a
nationally licensed Massage Therapist for 16 years. Among the good-sized list
of accomplishments, Vince noted that she was part of the Staff of the
Para-Olympics in Atlanta, GA. She has developed a method called “Integrated
Touch Therapy,” and performs massage therapy on animals as well as humans!
Patricia opened in an unconventionally
way…by asking for questions first. She commented, “Often people have questions
right away.” (Unfortunately our group wasn’t one of those groups. The room was
silent.)
Patricia quickly moved on by giving a
brief history of herself & her methods. She invited her pre-selected volunteer
(Amy Elsea, who it was said was
“taking one for the team.” Yeah, quite a sacrifice there, Amy!!) While she
spoke, she demonstrated her points & methods on Amy.
Here is a summary of her presentation:
-
Many people can benefit from massage
therapy, such as athletes, & people in high-stress occupations or
repetitive-motion jobs (e.g. keyboard entry, assembly-line).
-
She performs and teaches massage
therapy for animals as well. “Animals compete too!”
-
She feels strongly that “if you have
an injury, you need to see a doctor before I will touch you.”
-
Performs on athletes both
pre-competitions (to prepare) & post- competitions (to “flush tissues”).
-
Youngest patient: 6 weeks old
-
Oldest patient: 99 years old
-
Massage therapy (MT) can help speed
the healing time, increase circulation, and improve mental well-being.
-
There are many benefits to MT, such as
it lowers blood pressure, slows respiration, improves attitude and
temperament, improves skin tone, and strengthens the immune system.
-
Three steps to MT:

-
“Open up by touch” to find the
trigger points. (Done by stroking area to find painful spots.)
-
“Knead the tissue” to soften it &
increase blood to area to help with healing. (Done by rubbing area just
like kneading dough.)
-
“Flush out fluids” and bring in new
blood. (Done by a chopping motion called “hacking,” or by patting motions.)
-
Many of her clients come to get help
relaxing.
-
Should always check with your doctor
before beginning MT, because there are certain medications & conditions in
which MT should not be performed (e.g. blood thinners).
